AGING COMMITTEE
Minutes – August 7, 2009
Members in attendance – Lisa Simrell, Colleen McLaughlin, Michelle Schaaf
Guest Speaker – Lisa Frank – Homecare Co-ordinator for Consumer Workforce Council
Items of discussion –
- Budget Impasse – adverse effect on elderly population –
- consumer’s are still on wait list status therefore not receiving essential care needed in home.
- Some AAA counties are unable to pay vendors who currently provide essential services to elderly population. This could mean consumer’s who currently receive services may have services taken away.
- Possible lay-offs for care-managers
- Senior Centers having to close due to lack of funding
- Possibility for AAA care managers to not be paid due to lack of funding
- Lisa Frank gave presentation on structure of Work Force Council – hand out was provided by Lisa Frank as additional info. Lisa Frank left at which time committee discussed opinions on supporting or not supporting Work Force Council. It was discussed that Aging Committee does NOT support Work Force Council for the following reasons.
- There is not enough supporting proof in other states that this “council” works
- There are to many quality control & monitoring concerns that are unknown
- To many unanswered questions concerning where the funding would come from. We need to be budget conscious.
- Not condusive to Elderly needs ie. Many elderly have cognitive deficits and would not be able to hire there own aide.
- Home Health Agencies will fold.
- This does not do anything to promote a better worker ie no mandated training.
- Discussion concerning attendance at meetings
- Monday or Friday meetings are good for all.
- RSVP whether you are going to attend or not.
- Post all update on SEIU website under Aging
- need for new members - always important to get feedback from other counties.
- Next meeting slated for Sept 21, 2009
Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Simrell, Aging Chair
