SEIU PA State Council Announces Endorsed Candidates for the 2018 General Election

SEIU PA State Council Announces Endorsed Candidates for the 2018 General Election

Harrisburg, September 10 – Today, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Pennsylvania State Council, which represents 80,000 workers statewide – including property service workers, health care workers, public service workers, school employees, laundry and distribution workers – announced its list of endorsed candidates for the 2018 General Election.

In the face of unprecedented attacks on working families from the U.S. Supreme Court, the Trump administration, and in the halls of the Pennsylvania Statehouse, SEIU members across the state are working to elect champions who are not only going to defend labor rights, but who will advance the cause by helping more Pennsylvanians to join and form a union.

“Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ill-conceived decision in the Janus v. AFSCME case, SEIU members are working harder than ever to elect candidates who will champion the rights of working women and men,” said Matt Yarnell, President of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania and Secretary-Treasurer of the SEIU PA State Council.  “These are candidates who will rewrite the rules to make it easier for working people to join together in unions so that we can rebalance an economy that has been rigged to favor big corporations.”

Since July, SEIU members have been knocking on doors to re-elect union champions at the top of the ticket — Governor Tom Wolf and Senator Bob Casey.

“Governor Wolf and Senator Casey have made it clear that they stand with unions and working families while their opponents have made careers of working to lower wages and strip away workers’ rights,” said Gabe Morgan, Vice President, 32BJ SEIU and President of the SEIU PA State Council. “On November 6, SEIU members will turn out in force for Wolf and Casey, just as they did for Conor Lamb and to shut down Missouri right to work.”

SEIU members are also fighting to adopt the Fight for Fair PA agenda, which is a proactive vision that promotes a better and fairer commonwealth for all Pennsylvanians. Endorsed candidates will join SEIU in its Fight for $15 and union rights for workers, ensuring that our schools and human service programs are adequately funded, protecting the LGBTQ community and creating a more just criminal justice system.

“The stakes in the upcoming election could not be higher. SEIU members have an opportunity not only to rewrite the rules for working people but to create a more just commonwealth for all Pennsylvanians,” said David Melman, Manager of the Pennsylvania Joint Board of Workers United.

“2018 has produced the largest pool of like-minded congressional and legislative candidates in recent memory,” added Steve Catanese, President of SEIU Local 668.  “SEIU members are thrilled about the vast number of candidates who are running on platforms that mirror our core principles, and who following the Janus decision, will work alongside us to build power for union members and working families across the board.”

The SEIU State Council represents 80,000 workers statewide and is comprised of SEIU Local 32BJ, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, SEIU Local 668, and the Pennsylvania Joint Board of Workers United.   The following is the list of SEIU Pennsylvania State Council endorsed candidates:
